Mr. Welch’s early career started with business, banking, FSLIC and lender liability litigation during the turbulent Savings and Loan crisis in the late eighties. Mr. Welch then transitioned for a short period to first and third-party insurance work. In 1992, Mr. Welch started his own firm representing a then nascent satellite broadcaster which became a Fortune 200 juggernaut in the highly litigious telecommunications industry where turf wars and bet-the-ranch stakes were commonplace. Mr. Welch served as national lead counsel in virtually all of its high-profile litigation matters, including a $5 Billion lawsuit with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. arising out of a failed merger as well as its multi-billion dollar antitrust lawsuit against a satellite rival (DirecTV), which ultimately resulted in a $26 billion merger agreement with the rival company. Over an eighteen-year period representing the broadcaster, Mr. Welch litigated hundreds of complex matters nationwide against Fortune 500 companies involving trademarks, copyrights, breaches of contract, intricate statutory claims, and various business torts with nine-figure + amounts in controversy. Opposing counsel included the biggest firms from New York to L.A. The firm was selected as a Go-To Law Firm in Litigation, as featured in Fortune magazine, by DISH Network LLC (Fortune 200) from 2006 through 2011 and Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (Fortune 30) in 2012. In 2014, Mr. Welch personally obtained the 63rd largest jury verdict in the US, 8th largest in Texas, and 5th largest bad faith verdict for the five-year period 2013 – 2018 (www.propertycasualty360.com) arising out of an insurer’s gross negligence and statutory bad faith, resulting in actual and punitive damages - affirmed by Fifth Circuit (841 F.3d 669). Final Judgment of $40 Million, including over $4 Million in attorneys’ fees, all collected in full in lump sum cash. Insurer forced into run-off, insolvency, liquidation and loss of its license. Other representative clients include Bayer AG, C.R. Bard and tw telecom (n/k/a Lumen) to name a few. Licensed in Texas and Colorado and admitted to various Federal District Courts nationwide as well as multiple Circuit Courts of Appeals. Mr. Welch has handled matters in the vast majority of jurisdictions throughout the United States on both state and federal levels.
